Dr. Laura Biography

Born on January 16, 1947, in Brooklyn, New York to Monroe Schlessinger and Yolanda Schlessinger. Laura was the fifth of six children. Laura received her bachelors degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and her Ph.D. in Physiology from Columbia University. She received her certificate in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling from University of Southern California.

Laura went on to teach at University of California, Los Angeles, UCLA, University of California, Irvine and Pepperdine University. She met her husband Dr. Lewis G. Bishop, while teaching at USC, and married in 1985. Laura, gave birth to their only son Deryk, in November 1985, when she was 38.

In 1980 Laura started filling in for Barbara De Angelis' talk show on KFI, Los Angeles. At that time Dr. Toni Grant had the noon time show and was replace by Dr. Barbara De Angelis' so Dr. Laura took De Angelis' nighttime position. Several years later DeAngelis left and Laura got the noontime show.

Her show was syndicated in 1994, currently her show is heard on 275 stations.
